Hey everyone as the title suggests just a quick post today to pass along some information. The first thing I would encourage patients and/or parents of children with IBD to do is to take a minute or two to fill out a poll being held on another IBD bloggers website. She has teamed up with Dr. Peter Higgins (from the University of Michigan, I have met him personally and he is an incredible gastroenterologist/scientist) and they surveying information about difficulties patients have with insurance companies. Its all anonymous and is just to gather information. I just found out about the survey this morning and submitted my responses. I believe that this is limited to U.S. citizens or residents (not sure).
The second bit of information is more encouraging data about pregnancy outcomes for women taking certolizumab pegol (Cimzia). This data comes from the University of California San Francisco and shows that there were no increased birth defects overall or by trimester over normal rates. Additionally, Cimzia does not seem to pass easily across the placenta or breast milk (I presume because of the pegylation) which is encouraging. I believe the current recommendations are to avoid live vaccines in the infant for the whole first year of life but consult with your doctor who would obviously know best in this situation.
